MARTÍNEZ: That's NPR media correspondent David Folkenflik. Take the seeming efforts by the former president's team to block last year's election results - the press has to address this, I think. And I think it hurts journalists right now who are investigating other possible wrongdoing by Trump for which there's far greater evidence. When you get the facts wrong, when you contribute to misunderstanding, that was unfair to Trump and his supporters, as well as to the facts. And the Steele report drove a lot of conversation and coverage for years. But no one ever found any proof of collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russians. And you can base that on the bipartisan Senate Intelligence report. The Russians did interfere in the elections and Trump denied it. Trump wanted help from the Russians against Hillary Clinton. ![]() He had questionable business dealings there. This didn't prompt special prosecutor Robert Mueller's investigations. It doesn't fundamentally change our understanding of Trump and his relationship to Russia. MARTÍNEZ: But, David, why does all this matter?įOLKENFLIK: Let's be clear. The Steele report drove a lot of coverage, and I don't think you've seen news organizations sufficiently wrestle with that. All of which plays into Trump's claims that the press was out to get him. But let's be fair, this network also invited on lawmakers and others who invoked its themes. MSNBC and CNN gave a ton of airtime to former intelligence officials they had hired as pundits who gave it credence while NPR stayed away from specifics because it couldn't verify them. Think of McClatchy, which - the owner of the Miami Herald, The Kansas City Star and other major metro newspapers, that news organization hasn't retracted two separate stories claiming Trump's lawyer, Michael Cohen, met with Kremlin agents in Prague. He said it was in the public's interest to know what federal officials were worried about, even while noting that its allegations hadn't been verified. In January 2017, then-BuzzFeed editor-in-chief Ben Smith posted the entire document. In 2016, the question of the Steele dossier was bouncing around journalistic and national security circles. What are some of the others?įOLKENFLIK: Well, look, there are examples of specific stories, and then there's just the sheer volume of it. MARTÍNEZ: And that's far from the only example of flawed reporting, David. And The Post's new executive editor, Sally Buzbee, acknowledges it contradicts some of the previous reports. The Post, ABC News and The Journal are revisiting those past stories. Federal prosecutors now say that Danchenko never spoke to that Russian figure and that he also relied on a PR consultant with ties to the Clintons who was spreading gossip. Each identified a Russian business figure with ties to Trump as the main source for Danchenko, seemingly giving the dossier greater credibility. What does this mean for news stories that relied on his claims?įOLKENFLIK: Well, The Wall Street Journal, ABC News and The Washington Post had explicitly based some reporting on Danchenko's claims in the dossier. MARTÍNEZ: Now, the Justice Department has charged that key source for the dossier, Russian analyst Igor Danchenko, with lying the FBI. They looked shaky as time moved forward and have since been discredited, yet they echoed for several years. And a lot of the specific accusations in the dossier were even denied at the time. This dossier was misused by FBI agents to surveil a U.S. The dossier alleged the Trump campaign was also conspiring with Russia in the 2016 election to damage Hillary Clinton. And it claimed that Russia had cultivated Trump as a target for years and that the Russians were likely blackmailing him. It was put together by a former British intelligence official for a consulting firm hired by Democrats. So the dossier included a lot of accusations about Trump, a lot of salacious accusations about Trump's sex life. David, remind us about the dossier and the role it played in the 2016 race.ĭAVID FOLKENFLIK, BYLINE: Right. NPR media correspondent David Folkenflik joins us now to talk about this. It follows the indictment of a key source for the Steele dossier, the infamous opposition research into possible links between Trump and Russia. Some of the nation's leading news organizations are revisiting coverage of allegations against candidate and then President Donald Trump. ![]() The average weighted used fema trailer selling price is $31,648. Draft presentations allow students the opportunity to fix errors and to incorporate new ideas they learn from their peers’ presentations. During this time, students will be required to present a specific segment of their final project. One feedback strategy is to assign a presentation draft a couple of weeks before the final project is due. Just as you might provide feedback on the rough draft of an essay, this same opportunity for feedback has the potential to enhance students’ multimedia projects. In this way, you can evaluate the critical thought that went into the final production and better differentiate between the student’s understanding of the learning goals and their technical know-how.įinally, consider planning time for students to get feedback on their projects. This will give you insight into what the student hoped to achieve. An artist’s statement is a brief (1-2 page) reflection of the creative choices made on the project. If you worry that a student’s lack of technical skills could interfere with the clarity of their work, you can require an artist's statement to be submitted alongside the project. However, if this student has an unfocused argument that is hard to follow and unsupported, the grading rubric should favor the first student. On the other hand, a student who has mastered the use of recording tools may incorporate a musical opening and multiple musical interludes alongside crisp audio. A well organized podcast with an argument that is supported by cohesive evidence might have some fuzzy audio depending on the student’s proficiency with recording equipment. Remember that the production quality is just a part of the final product. Is there a tool that is relevant to the content area?.Are there resources and tutorials available to students if a specific tool is required?.Will the production quality affect the learning goal?.Is the type and amount of media used important?. ![]() Some questions to ask before setting technical requirements are: ![]() Giving all students access to the resources and time needed to learn any required tools is essential. For some students, working with technology may feel second nature to them, while for others, it may not. It is also very important to be explicit when it comes to expectations around production quality. In a project asking students to show their understanding of discipline specific theories through a mock Ted Talk video, you will want to be explicit that the expected tone/style is that of an academic presentation consistent with existing Ted Talks. You might also require students to incorporate multiple voices. If, for example, you ask students to create a podcast, you might require students to follow a linear storytelling format. If you are requiring a specific media genre, give explicit instruction about the expectations of the genre. When assessing multimedia projects, any conventions that you want students to follow should be explicitly taught, and the assignment description and grading criteria should clearly remind students of the academic expectations. One way to illustrate how media connects to the course goals is to state what the connection looks like on the assessment rubric. An example of this would be a rubric item that states, “The use of multimedia: sounds, images, videos forward the author’s argument and allows for critical reflection.” The rubric item explains to students exactly what you expect the media to do. ![]() If you are requiring a multimedia assessment, you will want to make explicit your rationale for requiring multimedia content as opposed to a traditional test format. The first step when designing an alternative assessment is to make sure the assessment aligns to your learning objectives. If clear and measurable assessment outcomes are established and communicated to students in advance, grading multimedia projects can prove to be an objective and equitable process. Despite these benefits, instructors may hesitate to embrace creative assessment formats like multimedia projects for fear that the grading of these projects is too subjective. Unlike traditional assessment formats, multimedia assessments give students the option to use tools that they may be more comfortable with to demonstrate their learning.Īnother benefit of multimedia assessments is that they typically require students to create, analyze, evaluate, and synthesize all learner tasks that fall at the higher end of Bloom’s cognitive skills. While some students feel capable of demonstrating their learning on traditional assessments like exams and papers, other students struggle to show their learning on these assessment formats. One of the benefits of using a non-traditional assessment, like a multimedia project, is the potential for increased student performance on assessments. Sheriff Bowen said many of the stolen items were found in Indianapolis pawn shops and that helped lead them to Price and Harlow. There have actually been seven burglaries and detectives are not sure if others are responsible for the other two, or if Price and Harlow are not fessing up. He continued, “I’m a Christian and I’d feel awful if i shot somebody, but to protect my family, if that’s what it would take, I would have to do that.” “It’s kind of unnerving it’s been right here in this area!” said Frank Harris, a neighbor of one of the victims. “There are folks out there that are very desperate, especially these folks that are addicted to drugs, and they’ll go to any lengths or any means necessary,” said Sheriff Bowen. Sheriff Bowen said Price confessed that she and 30-year-old Aaron Harlow were responsible for five residential burglaries. Hamilton County Sheriff Mark Bowen said intelligence led them to a gas station Wednesday where they found the car and arrested 38-year-old Amy Price on a parole violation. “I have it for protection beside my bed.”Ī short distance away on Tuesday, a homeowner walked in on the burglary in the 19000 block of Edgewood Lane and got a good description of a suspect and a great description of a getaway vehicle. “They took two flat screen TV’s that were new and they took my pistol,” said Stephens.
